Udupi : As the Diwali celebrations begin, people of all ages, from children upwards, are preparing to burst various types of fireworks along with enjoying sweets. The Udupi District Environmental Officer of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has announced that in Udupi district, bursting of firecrackers is permitted only between 8 PM and 10 PM at night, and is completely banned during all other times.
Although bursting firecrackers is common during Diwali, the activity causes air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution, and environmental pollution, leading to a smoky atmosphere that lasts for about three to four days. The department has warned that this severely affects the health of small children, the elderly, and animals and birds.
The Supreme Court of the country has given clear directions to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali and, as per the order of the National Green Tribunal, has instructed the use of only Green Crackers recommended by CSIR-NEERI. These Green Crackers will have the CSIR-NEERI logo and QR Codes printed on them in green color. Only such firecrackers are allowed for sale and use by the public.
Therefore, the District Environmental Officer of KSPCB has appealed to the public to use only Green Crackers to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali and to burst them only during the time stipulated by the Supreme Court.
The noise from firecrackers burst by the public during Diwali and other festivals can cause panic and fear in pets/livestock, potentially leading them to refuse food for several days or flee from their original location.
Therefore, the Member Secretary of the Animal Welfare Organisation and Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry have appealed to the public to take safety measures to protect animals from loud noises and pay attention to this matter, ensuring only eco-friendly fireworks (Green Crackers) are burst as per the Supreme Court order.
