Mangaluru : The Central Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved the transfer of the maintenance of the Surathkal-Nanthoor-B.C. Road port connectivity stretch, which falls under the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) limits, to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
This crucial decision is the result of persistent efforts by Dakshina Kannada MP, Capt. Brijesh Chowta, providing a permanent solution to a long-standing demand for improving the essential connectivity network in the district. The transfer to NHAI is expected to ensure proper maintenance and upgrading of this critical road corridor in Mangaluru.
Background of the Issue:
The port connectivity highway had deteriorated significantly, causing considerable disruption to both cargo and everyday traffic. Previously managed by the National Highway Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) – a special purpose vehicle – the road suffered due to a lack of a dedicated maintenance agency, insufficient funding, and untimely upkeep. Capt. Chowta had made it a priority to find a permanent fix for this severe issue.
MP’s Intervention and Success:
Capt. Chowta consistently advocated for this transfer, meeting with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and other ministry officials on several occasions. His initial intervention on July 23, 2024, highlighting issues like heavy traffic, lack of service roads, and poor drainage, successfully secured an allocation of ₹28.58 crore for immediate improvements.
Following the final approval, the Highway Ministry has directed NHAI to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the comprehensive improvement and safety measures required for the Surathkal-B.C. Road stretch.
MP Chowta’s Reaction:
Responding to the Ministry’s historic decision, MP Capt. Chowta extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister Nitin Gadkari, and the officials. He stated that this decision is historic for strengthening cargo movement and economic activities in Dakshina Kannada. He expressed confidence that the transfer will greatly benefit daily commuters, entrepreneurs, and enhance the overall ecosystem of the NMPT.
