Mangaluru : The Central Government has approved and sanctioned a significant grant of over ₹11.63 crore for major infrastructure works aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and establishing accident-free zones at two prominent highway junctions on the outskirts of Mangaluru city—Baikampady and Kuloor. Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Capt. Brijesh Chowth announced that the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways released this substantial funding to construct vital underpasses at these busy intersections located along National Highway 66.
Addressing the long-standing public demand, the Ministry of Highways approved the construction of a Light Vehicle Underpass (LVUP) at the Baikampady junction with an allocation of ₹7.09 crore. This junction had notorious reputation as a critical black spot, posing severe safety challenges to daily commuters and motorists. The new underpass will facilitate a direct, hazard-free route for vehicles heading towards the bustling Baikampady Industrial Area, eliminating the need for dangerous turns across the main highway lanes, while simultaneously ensuring a seamless, uninterrupted flow of Udupi-bound traffic.
Simultaneously, an underpass project worth ₹4.54 crore has been approved near the KIOCL Junction and Kuloor Bridge along National Highway 66. This particular development is designed to systematically decongest the heavy vehicular traffic moving toward the popular Tannirbhavi Beach as well as the industrial zones of MSEZ. On behalf of the citizens of Dakshina Kannada district, MP Capt. Brijesh Chowth expressed his profound gratitude to the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for promptly addressing the regional infrastructure requirements.
Reflecting on the achievement, Capt. Brijesh Chowth highlighted that the government remains deeply committed to improving highway safety and structural connectivity across Dakshina Kannada. He pointed out that the NMPT port road section was previously under the jurisdiction of the National Highways Logistics Management Limited, creating persistent maintenance hurdles due to fund scarcity and the absence of a designated agency. Following continuous administrative interventions, these technical obstacles were resolved, and the port-connectivity road was successfully handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). With the official approvals now secured for both the Kuloor and Baikampady underpasses, the general public traveling between Mangaluru and Udupi, alongside industrial commuters, can look forward to a drastically safer transit experience. The MP assured that every necessary effort will be made to ensure both projects are completed within a strict, stipulated timeframe.
