Mangaluru : Mangalore International Airport (MIA) serves as a critical connectivity hub for the coast and has faced threats, including a high-profile explosives incident in 2020. Following these events, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has implemented stringent security measures utilizing advanced technology and specialized equipment to ensure passenger safety.
Past Incidents and Security Concerns
The airport has received multiple terror threat calls. A major security lapse was exposed in 2020 when one Aditya Rao effortlessly planted explosives inside a laptop bag on the airport premises. The failure to detect the suspicious bag initially highlighted the need for improved security. The subsequent eight-hour operation, which involved moving the bomb to a trench and detonating it, also raised questions about the lack of readily available bomb disposal mechanisms at the time.
Modern Security Enhancements by CISF
Under the rules of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the CISF now operates with special personnel and advanced technology to secure the premises. Key security system additions include:
Technology & Access: The DigiYatra system is in place for paperless entry and security clearance.
Physical Security: The airport now features a 24/7 Police Check Post at the entry, as well as reinforced barriers like bollards and tyre killers at entry points. Bulletproof vehicles and advanced Bomb Disposal Equipment have also been incorporated.
Screening Systems: The airport uses state-of-the-art screening and detection systems for passengers and their bags, including X-ray machines for all hand baggage, metal detectors, and body scanners.
Operational Preparedness and Surveillance
The CISF’s operational capabilities have been boosted with specialised gear and teams. This includes Miniature Remote Operated Vehicles for suspicious luggage containment, hands-free communication kits for staff, and essential surveillance equipment like night vision binoculars and IR Illuminators. To respond swiftly to any threat, a Quick Response Team (QRT) and A9 Squads are operational. The CISF manages the primary airport security, supplemented by a private security setup within the terminal, with a police check post near the toll booth managed by Bajpe police.
