Bantwal: A legal confrontation erupted in Kepu village on December 20, after the Vitla police raided an unauthorized cockfighting event. In a significant move, the police registered a case against the sitting MLA of the Puttur constituency, accusing him of inciting the public to defy law enforcement and proceed with the illegal betting ring.
Police Intervention and Escalation Acting on credible intelligence regarding an illegal gathering at a paddy field owned by Muralidhar Rai, a team led by the Vitla Police Inspector arrived at the scene. Initially, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by educating the crowd on the legal prohibitions surrounding animal cruelty and gambling. However, the situation took a tense turn when the Puttur MLA, who was present at the site, allegedly provoked the gathered participants to disregard the police warnings and commence the event.
Crackdown and Seizures As the crowd began the cockfight following the alleged instigation, the police mobilized additional security to maintain order and stop the illegal activity. During the operation, 16 individuals were taken into custody. Officers also seized 22 roosters along with several sharp metal blades (locally known as Baalu) that are tied to the birds’ legs during the fights.
Legal Consequences The Vitla police have formally registered an FIR (No. 190/2025) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, citing sections related to provocation and obstructing public servants. Additionally, charges have been filed under Sections 3 and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The landowner, Muralidhar Rai, has also been named in the case for facilitating the illegal assembly on his property without a permit.
