Mangaluru : A major train disaster was averted near Palakunnu, under the Bekal police station limits in Kasaragod, after a concrete slab was discovered placed on the railway tracks. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM near the Kotikulam railway station. It appears that miscreants used a concrete slab originally brought for railway maintenance work and deliberately positioned it on the track to cause an accident. Upon receiving the information, railway officials rushed to the spot and cleared the obstruction immediately.
The danger was averted thanks to the alertness of two local residents, Praveen and Muhammad Shanid, who reside in the nearby railway quarters. They spotted the slab on the tracks and promptly alerted the authorities. Remarkably, a goods train had passed through the same stretch just fifteen minutes before the slab was discovered, suggesting that the miscreants carried out the act in a very narrow window of time.
The Bekal police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) have launched a high-level joint investigation into the matter. Authorities are investigating whether this was an act of mindless mischief or a deliberate attempt at sabotage. Security has been tightened along the stretch, and officials are scanning for any suspicious activity or witnesses in the vicinity to track down those responsible for this life-threatening act.
