Kasaragod : In a dramatic turn of events, a 74-year-old man climbed a BSNL mobile tower in Badiyadka on Tuesday morning, threatening suicide after being made to run around government offices for 27 years to obtain his land title deeds and important documents. The individual has been identified as P. K. Mohandas, a resident of Narampady and owner of a local studio in Badiyadka.
According to available information, Mohandas scaled the mobile tower around 8:30 AM on Tuesday holding a petrol bottle in his hand and putting a noose around his neck. He warned that if anyone attempted to reach him, he would set himself on fire or jump from the tower. Alarmed by this scene, local residents immediately alerted the police and authorities.
Upon receiving the information, the Badiyadka police and Kasaragod Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the spot. The rescue team faced immense difficulty in bringing him down safely. Ultimately, they managed to divert his attention by making a phone call to his mobile phone. Capitalizing on this opportunity, fire service personnel skillfully climbed the tower and brought him down safely after a high-voltage three-hour operation.
It has been revealed that Mohandas had been visiting revenue offices endlessly for the past 27 years to secure his land rights and other essential certificates. Frustrated by the negligence and apathy of government officials, he resorted to this extreme step. Police sources mentioned that this is not his first such protest; he had previously climbed trees and towers four times for the same issue, only to be persuaded down each time with false promises. Notably, in 2018, he had climbed a mobile tower on the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises. Tuesday’s incident marks the fifth time he has scaled a tower fighting for his rights.
