Mangaluru : Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V. has directed officials to take all necessary measures to ensure a seamless supply of drinking water across the district during the upcoming summer months. Presiding over a meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority at the DC office on Thursday, he emphasized that every local body, including Gram Panchayats and urban wards, must have a proactive action plan ready to prevent any water scarcity. He instructed officials to identify all available water sources and ensure they are utilized effectively to maintain a steady supply.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed that officials from all 14 urban local bodies and various Gram Panchayats must personally monitor the water distribution networks and sources. While prioritizing existing pipelines, he noted that water tankers should only be deployed as a last resort in cases of extreme necessity. Local bodies were further advised to utilize their available funds to manage these summer water requirements. Regarding the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) limits, the DC took serious note of unauthorized water connections along the Thumbe-Netravati supply line and ordered immediate action to regularize them through formal agreements and fee collections with respective Panchayats.
During the session, MCC officials reported that seven jack-wells belonging to various departments and industries are currently operational at the Thumbe-Netravati dam. Based on current estimates, the water levels are expected to be sufficient for the summer demand. However, the DC warned that public complaints regarding water shortages would not be tolerated. He also expressed strong displeasure toward officials of the Rural Drinking Water Supply Department for failing to provide adequate information during the meeting. Additional Deputy Commissioner Raju K, Deputy Conservator of Forests Anthony Mariappa, and Mangaluru Assistant Commissioner Meenakshi Arya were among the key officials present.
