Mangaluru : The Mangaluru City Police Department has submitted a significant proposal to the District Road Safety Committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, emphasizing the urgent need for flyovers to address the city’s burgeoning traffic woes. With increasing vehicle density making commuting, parking, and pedestrian movement increasingly difficult, the police department suggests that visionary infrastructure projects are the only viable solution, especially since narrow roads in the city core offer little to no scope for further widening. Drawing inspiration from Bengaluru’s long-standing elevated corridors, the proposal outlines how flyovers can effectively segregate through-traffic from local movement.
The proposal specifically highlights two critical stretches for flyover construction. The first proposed route extends from the Hampankatta Clock Tower through Ambedkar Circle to the Karavali Circle in Kankanady. This area is notoriously congested due to narrow roads and the presence of nearly 600 buses operating from the State Bank bus stand. The lack of dedicated bus bays often results in buses occupying half the road width to board passengers, causing massive bottlenecks at key junctions like Balmatta and Bendorewell. An elevated road here would allow direct traffic to bypass these congested points entirely.
The second proposed flyover is identified for the M.G. Road stretch, connecting PVS Junction to Narayana Guru (Ladyhill) Circle. This corridor is a hub for educational institutions, commercial complexes, and halls, leading to high traffic density. Frequent interference from vehicles entering from side roads further disrupts the flow of direct traffic heading towards Kottara Chowki. Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy stated that these forward-looking projects are essential for public welfare and smooth transit in the coming years, urging the state government to consider these proposals for immediate implementation.
