Mangaluru : As temperatures continue to soar across the state, the intense summer heat is taking a toll not just on humans but also on wildlife. In response to the rising mercury levels in the coastal region, the management of Pilikula Biological Park has implemented proactive measures to safeguard the health and well-being of its resident animals. Recognizing the signs of heat stress among the 900-plus birds and animals sheltered at the park, officials have launched a comprehensive ‘Summer Management Plan’ to mitigate the impact of the sweltering weather.
The primary strategy includes the installation of overhead sprinklers within the animal enclosures to provide a continuous fine mist, effectively lowering the ambient temperature and creating a cooler micro-environment. For animals that are particularly sensitive to heat, the authorities have deployed fans and coolers to ensure a comfortable living space. These technological interventions are crucial in maintaining a stable climate within the enclosures as the external coastal heat becomes increasingly oppressive.
Furthermore, specialized arrangements have been made for large carnivores like tigers and leopards, including the provision of water ponds where they can submerge themselves to naturally regulate their body temperatures. Animals with thick fur coats are receiving extra attention, with staff performing regular water spraying sessions to prevent overheating. Spanning across 82 hectares, the Dr. Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama continues to prioritize the safety of its wildlife, setting a noteworthy example of animal welfare during extreme weather conditions.
