Chennai : Actor-turned-politician Vijay has created a major stir in Tamil Nadu politics after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded assembly elections. Securing 108 seats out of 234, TVK’s performance has surprised analysts and established political giants alike. In a significant move on Tuesday, Vijay convened a meeting with newly elected MLAs at the party headquarters, where he was formally elected as the Leader of the Legislative Party. During the gathering, he paid floral tributes to icons like Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, B.R. Ambedkar, K. Kamaraj, Velu Nachiyar, and Anjalai Ammal before discussing government formation strategies and legislative conduct with his members.
The swearing-in ceremony is reportedly scheduled for May 7 in Chennai, and it is expected to be a massive event featuring senior political leaders, celebrities, and thousands of supporters. Given Vijay’s immense public following, local authorities are already making extensive security arrangements for the occasion. The election, held on April 23 with counting concluded on May 4, saw the DMK and AIADMK trailing with 59 and 47 seats respectively, marking a historic shift in the state’s political landscape.
Despite being the largest party, TVK still requires 10 more seats to reach the majority mark of 118. Media reports suggest that Vijay is likely to form a coalition government with the Congress and other smaller parties. This potential alliance includes the Congress (5 seats), VCK (2 seats), and CPI/CPI(M) (2 seats each), which would collectively provide an 11-member boost to the treasury benches. Sources indicate that as part of the power-sharing agreement, the Congress might receive two ministerial portfolios, while other smaller allies could be allotted one cabinet position each.
