Mangaluru : Young Indians (Yi) Mangaluru Chapter successfully organised the Young Indians Parliament (YIP) 2026 at The Bharath Academy, Mangaluru, bringing together 60 students from Grades 9 and 10 representing various schools for an immersive experience in democracy, leadership, public policy, and responsible citizenship.
Young Indians Parliament is an experiential civic leadership initiative that provides students with an opportunity to understand democratic processes and experience parliamentary proceedings. Through debates and deliberations on issues of national importance, the participants developed essential skills in public speaking, critical thinking, research, leadership, and collaborative decision-making.
The event was inaugurated by Capt. Brijesh Chowta, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Dakshina Kannada, who addressed the young parliamentarians and encouraged them to become informed, responsible, and proactive citizens of the country. He asked the students to come up with questions that he could raise during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. Capt. Chowta reminisced about the ideals of Swami Vivekananda, July 4 being his Mahasamadhi Day, and encouraged the students to learn from his teachings.
Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty, MLA, Mangaluru City North, also graced the occasion and shared valuable insights with the participants.
The Parliament began with the political parties announcing their manifestos, followed by the formation of a coalition government. Each MP was then given time to speak on Matters of Urgent Importance. This was followed by Question Hour and Zero Hour. Bills were drafted by the parliamentary committees and subsequently debated and voted upon, following which the Parliament was adjourned for the day.
The theme provided for discussion at the Parliament was “Balancing Economic Growth, Environmental Sustainability and Community Livelihoods in India’s Coastal Regions: The Future of Ports, Fisheries, Tourism, Marine Ecosystems and the Blue Economy.”
Throughout the event, the young parliamentarians displayed remarkable confidence, research, eloquence, and maturity. They questioned with courage, debated with conviction, disagreed with dignity, and listened to diverse perspectives with respect, reflecting the true spirit of parliamentary democracy.
The event concluded with a Valedictory Ceremony and the recognition of outstanding participants for their performance, leadership, debating skills, and parliamentary conduct.
