Udupi : In a preemptive move to prevent accidents and potential landslides during the upcoming monsoon season, Shivamogga District Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti has issued an official order banning the movement of heavy commercial vehicles, including those transporting gravel and freight, along the National Highway 169A Agumbe Ghat stretch.
This strict prohibition will come into effect on June 15 and remain active until the end of the rainy season. The decision was triggered by a significant increase in heavy vehicular traffic on the Thirthahalli-Malpe-Udupi highway following a landslide at the Hulikal Ghat route, where temporary protective and restoration works are still incomplete. Authorities feared that continued heavy traffic on the fragile Agumbe Ghat could result in roadside cave-ins and severe disruption of public transport, thereby cutting off vital healthcare access to Manipal, Udupi, and Mangaluru for patients traveling from Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chitradurga, and Haveri districts.
To ensure uninterrupted connectivity, the district administration has outlined alternative routes for commuters. Heavy vehicles traveling from Thirthahalli toward Udupi must divert via the Thirthahalli – Nagara – Nagodi – Kollur – Kundapura – Udupi route, or alternatively, use the Thirthahalli – Sringeri – Kerekatte – Bajagoli – Karkala – Udupi road. Conversely, heavy vehicles heading from Udupi toward Thirthahalli are directed to travel through the Udupi – Kundapura – Kollur – Nagodi – Nagara – Thirthahalli highway, or navigate via the Karkala – Bajagoli – Kerekatte – Sringeri – Thirthahalli network until the seasonal ban is lifted.
