Ujire : The world of theatre witnessed a historic milestone in Dharmasthala as an AI robot named ‘Shruti’ made its acting debut on stage. This innovative experiment took place during the valedictory ceremony of the 2026 “Naliyona Ba” theatre camp, organized by the Rangashiva Kalabalaga at Vasantha Mahal. Conceptualized and guided by Hemavathi V. Heggade, the nine-day camp was successfully led by theatre director Sunil Shetty Kalkoppa.
The highlight of the event was the performance of the play “Hooviya Kanasu,” written by Hemavathi V. Heggade. The play follows the journey of a young girl named Hoovi and her dream world, where the AI robot ‘Shruti’ plays a pivotal role in driving the narrative forward. The story deals with themes of social deception and the cunning honesty of a child. The appearance of the actual robot on stage at the end of the play created a sense of wonder among the audience, marking a successful fusion of traditional theatre and modern technology.
The free camp aimed to re-engage children with theatre in the modern age, featuring impressive performances by the young participants. Members of the Heggade family were present to congratulate the children. The technical execution was supported by Yashwanth Belthangady and Sandesh, while students from the SDM Centre for Theatre Studies managed make-up and lighting. This experimental integration of AI into performing arts has opened a new direction for the future of theatre.
