Mangaluru : Deep-sea fishing operations resumed at the Mangaluru Old Port jetty on Monday, three days after the official end of the annual monsoon fishing ban. Nearly a hundred trawl boats ventured out into the Arabian Sea with fresh hopes of a bountiful harvest as weather conditions began to show signs of improvement.
Extreme winds and rough sea conditions over the past two days had temporarily grounded the fishing fleet at the dockyard. Despite having fully stocked up on fuel and ice, fishermen were forced to wait out the turbulent weather. As the maritime conditions gradually turned favorable, boats started navigating out through the estuary mouth one after another.
Fishermen entering the deep sea anticipate being out for around ten days, depending on the availability of marine stock. The success of this initial batch is expected to determine when the remaining boats will set sail for the new fishing season.
Meanwhile, in Malpe, mechanized fishing boats have remained anchored due to ongoing rough sea conditions and massive waves, which make casting fishing nets impossible. Karunakara Salian, President of the Deep Sea Trawl Boat Fishermen’s Association, noted that boats with workers from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are ready to venture out as soon as the sea stabilizes, while boats reliant on local and North Canara labor are expected to set sail after August 6.
