Mangaluru : In the aftermath of the tragic accident that occurred at the MRPL unit on September 30, MP Captain Brijesh Chowta announced that a maximum compensation of ₹1.20 crore has been sanctioned to the family of the deceased, Manish Karkera, a resident of Haleyangadi. Additionally, arrangements have been made to provide a job to one eligible family member of the victim.
Speaking to reporters, MP Brijesh Chowta shared that on the day of the incident and during the funeral the following day, local elected representatives—including MLAs Umanath Kotian and Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty, Gram Panchayat leaders, and representatives from MRPL worker unions—stood firmly in support of the aggrieved family. He added that discussions were held with the Union Petroleum Minister and ministry officials to ensure the government extended immediate support to the family during this crisis.
Furthermore, the long-pending demand to provide health insurance coverage for MRPL’s contract workers and their dependents has reached its final stage. Discussions initiated in February 2025 involved MRPL management, employee union representatives, and elected leaders. Since MRPL is associated with ONGC, key policy matters require board approval from ONGC. The MP noted that he has personally urged the ONGC Chairman and Petroleum Ministry officials to expedite the process, with MRPL officials assuring that a formal policy will be framed and announced within a month.
