Mangaluru : Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta has strongly advocated for the establishment of a Karnataka High Court bench in Mangaluru, stating that as the state’s most prominent emerging city after Bengaluru, having a High Court bench here would significantly elevate its stature and strategic importance. He was delivering the keynote address during a consultative meeting held at a private hotel in Mangaluru on Saturday, convened in the wake of the formation of a judicial committee to examine the feasibility of setting up new High Court benches in the state.
Emphasizing the collective nature of the demand, Captain Chowta highlighted that the movement for a High Court bench should not remain confined to the legal fraternity alone, but must evolve into a widespread public campaign. Drawing a parallel to the long-pending administrative victory of transferring the Mangaluru railway region from the Palakkad division to the Mysuru division, he expressed confidence that the demand for a judicial bench would similarly see fulfillment through sustained public and administrative efforts, while urging for opinion-gathering drives at the taluk level to bolster the cause.
The consultative meeting saw active participation and speeches from prominent public figures and legal leaders, including Mangaluru City South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, former Rajya Sabha member B. Ibrahim, former minister B. Nagaraja Shetty, and former MLC Monappa Bhandari. Key representatives of the legal community, including Mangaluru Bar Association President Jagadish Shenava, Struggle Committee PRO M.P. Noronha, and former Bar Association President H.V. Raghavendra, also addressed the gathering and shared their perspectives on expediting the process.
The event witnessed attendance from numerous advocates, office bearers, and leaders representing various socio-cultural and professional organizations across the district. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shridhar Shetty, while Jagadish K.R. efficiently compered the proceedings.
