Ujire : Renowned Kannada literary scholar, epigraphy expert, and former head of the Kannada Department at SDM Autonomous College, Ujire, Dr. S.D. Shetty (80), passed away on Wednesday at a private hospital in Mysuru after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Family sources confirmed that his final rites will be conducted on Thursday at Ujire.
Originally hailing from Salekeri in Haladipura, Honnavar, Dr. Shetty earned his Master’s degree in Kannada from Karnatak University in 1971. He dedicated over 35 years of his career as a lecturer, reader, professor, and head of the department at SDM College, Ujire. Beyond academics, he served as the Director of the Dr. Ha. Ma. Nayak Research Centre, managed the SDM Publication Division, and headed the Sri Manjunatheshwara Cultural Research Foundation as well as the Manjusha Museum in Dharmasthala. Authoring several insightful works on Jainism, historical inscriptions, and heritage research, he was widely revered as a disciplined academician, disciplined writer, and articulate orator.
Expressing deep grief over the loss, Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade recalled Dr. Shetty’s extraordinary contributions to art, literature, and epigraphic research. He highlighted Dr. Shetty’s instrumental role in enriching the Manjusha Museum with rare historical artifacts gathered from across the country and expanding the institutional library with valuable palm-leaf manuscripts. Dr. Heggade remarked that his demise is an irreparable loss to the academic world and offered prayers to Lord Manjunatha to grant strength to the bereaved family.
