Udupi : The Shirva police have successfully apprehended a 52-year-old man in connection with the controversial case of slaughtering cattle and dumping its remains into the Papanashini River beneath the Kallottu bridge. The arrested individual has been identified as Ashok Koraga, a resident living near the Babbu Swami Daivasthana in Shirva Padavu. Following a rigorous investigation, law enforcement personnel tracked down and arrested Ashok on June 5 at Padavu in Shirva village. Authorities have also recovered cattle hide along with the sharp weapons utilized to commit the crime, and the accused has been subsequently produced before the local court.
The unsettling incident initially came to light on June 1 when local residents spotted the discarded animal remains in the river. Acting swiftly on the information, the Shirva police, alongside the Assistant Director of the Kaup Veterinary Hospital and the District Crime Investigation officials, conducted a thorough spot inspection (mahazar). During the search, teams recovered and seized significant evidence from the water, including a portion of the animal’s upper jaw, internal organs, flesh, and two hooves. A formal criminal case was immediately registered at the Shirva police station based on these grim discoveries.
The incident had sparked immense outrage among various right-wing Sangh Parivar organizations, who strongly condemned the act and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved. The outfits had even issued a strict ultimatum to the police department, warning of massive protests if the perpetrators were not caught swiftly. The successful operation to defuse the tension and nab the accused was executed under the leadership of Karkala Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Vijay Prasad and Kaup Police Inspector Azat Ali. The investigative team also comprised Shirva Sub-Inspectors Manjunath Marabada and Lohith Kumar C.S., alongside police personnel Manjunath Adiga, Kiran, Yallalinga, Raghu from Kaup, and Padubidri station staff members Rahiman and Sandesh.
