Mysuru : In a striking contrast of ideologies, Durga Stalin, the wife of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, visited prominent Hindu temples in Karnataka to offer special prayers just days after her son’s highly publicized remarks regarding Sanatana Dharma. Known for her deep spiritual devotion, her temple visit has triggered widespread discussion across political and social circles. Her pilgrimage specifically targeted revered shrines in the neighboring state’s Mysuru and Mandya districts.
During her religious itinerary, Durga Stalin paid obeisance at the iconic Chamundeshwari Temple atop Chamundi Hills in Mysuru, followed by a visit to the historic Sri Nimishamba Temple in Srirangapatna, Mandya. At these holy shrines, she performed the traditional and sacred ritual of ‘Udi Seve’, a customary gesture of devotion involving the offering of a traditional silk saree, glass bangles, flowers, and fruits to the presiding goddess. Given the severe political backlash surrounding her son’s controversial statements, her open display of deep religious faith has become a focal point of intense public interest.
Following the completion of her religious rituals, Durga Stalin made a surprise courtesy visit to the private residence of senior JD(S) leader and MLA G.T. Devegowda, where she met the family and received blessings from the veteran political couple. A video capturing this unexpected domestic meeting has since surfaced on social media platforms and is circulating widely.
The backdrop to this visit stems from a major ideological controversy in Tamil Nadu, where, shortly after a new administration assumed office, former Chief Minister Stalin’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, strongly reiterated his opposition to Sanatana Dharma, asserting that it divides people and must be eradicated. This followed his earlier provocative remarks at a convention where he compared Sanatana Dharma to mosquitoes, dengue, malaria, and coronavirus, arguing that mere opposition was insufficient and total elimination was necessary due to its caste-based division of society.
These comments had triggered massive national outrage and condemnation from various public figures. Renowned multilingual actor Arjun Sarja was among those who vehemently opposed the statement, questioning the rationale of those seeking to eradicate Sanatana Dharma by asking if such individuals would also alienate and separate themselves from their own parents, stating that such a proposition is impossible.
