Udupi : In a significant spiritual journey, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay visited the historic Sri Mookambika Temple in Kollur on Friday afternoon to offer special prayers. During his pilgrimage, the Chief Minister paid obeisance to the presiding deity and made a devout offering of a traditional saree alongside a specially crafted silver sword weighing 1.6 kilograms.
The high-profile visit began earlier in the day when the Chief Minister arrived at the Mangaluru International Airport via a special flight, subsequently traveling to the temple town of Kollur by road. Upon reaching the local guest house, the leader, clad in a traditional red shawl, was received with full state honors and a traditional ‘Poornakumbha’ welcome by the temple priests. Greeting the gathered well-wishers with folded hands, he proceeded into the inner sanctum where priests performed elaborate rituals amidst Vedic chants and tied a sacred thread around his wrist. The Chief Minister spent nearly half an hour in deep meditation inside the sanctum sanctorum, after which the temple administration officially felicitated him.
The dual persona of the leader as a top politician and a charismatic cinema icon drew immense crowds to the temple town from various regions. Undeterred by torrential downpours, enthusiastic fans and onlookers had gathered around the temple premises as early as 1:00 PM, with many climbing atop trees and adjacent buildings just to catch a glimpse of the visiting leader. The atmosphere reverberated with high energy as supporters blew whistles—the official symbol of his political party, the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)—and chanted slogans in his support. To manage the massive surge of people, a heavy police contingent was deployed to enforce strict crowd control and ensure flawless security.
This visit marks the very first time Joseph Vijay has set foot in the sacred precincts of Kollur. With this pilgrimage, he follows in the footsteps of his illustrious predecessors from Tamil Nadu politics, as former Chief Ministers M.G. Ramachandraon and J. Jayalalithaa were also devout followers of Goddess Mookambika who frequently visited the shrine to offer special prayers and fulfill religious vows.
