Mangaluru : Following credible intelligence regarding undertrial prisoners illegally using prohibited mobile devices inside the prison premises, the Mangaluru City Police conducted a surprise raid on the Mangaluru District Prison. During the thorough search operation targeting ‘A-Block’ as part of an ongoing investigation, officers seized a total of 10 smartphones from nine inmates. A case was registered late on the night of September 8, 2026, at the Barke Police Station under Crime No. 82/2026, invoking Section 323 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons Act.
The nine inmates caught illegally possessing and using the mobile phones have been identified as Rifat Ali, Ibrahim Khalil, Ashfaq alias Juttu Ashfaq, Arshad, Dawood Farwez, Nazarath Ali, Shifan, Abdul Sadiq, and Arfaj. Among them, Rifat Ali, Ibrahim Khalil, Ashfaq, and Arshad are key accused in the recent murder case of Arif near Thokottu. Furthermore, Dawood Farwez, Nazarath Ali, Shifan, and Abdul Sadiq are drug peddlers implicated in NDPS cases, while the ninth inmate, Arfaj, is an accused under the KOCA Act in a case registered at the Kankanady Town Police Station.
Addressing the media, the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner stated that officers from the Barke Police Station have launched an extensive investigation into the security lapse. The probe aims to uncover how these smartphones were smuggled inside the prison walls and to determine the exact activities and communications conducted using these illicit devices.
