Ullal : A massive human chain protest was organized by the CPIM Ullal Zone Committee in front of the Ullal Community Health Centre, demanding the immediate cancellation of the agreement to hand over government hospitals to private medical colleges.
Protesters gathered under the slogan “Save Government Hospitals,” raising alarms over the commercialization of healthcare.
Addressing the gathering after the human chain formation, CPIM Dakshina Kannada District Secretary Muneer Katipalla fiercely criticized local political leaders, stating that healthcare commercialization directly violates constitutional ideals. He alleged that elected representatives from both the BJP and Congress in the district are acting as custodians of private medical colleges, leaving common citizens devastated by the monopoly of private healthcare. Katipalla specifically targeted UT Khader, pointing out that despite being elected by the ordinary people of Ullal, he behaves like a minister representing private hospitals, adding that the Ullal Community Hospital—which Khader enthusiastically handed over to private entities—shuts down at 4:00 PM every evening.
Further intensifying the attack, CPIM Ullal Zone Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal remarked that the state government, which is responsible for safeguarding public health, has shown it is no different from the BJP in selling off public assets by handing over the health sector to private players without any hesitation. He sarcastically noted that Khader’s steps toward the privatization of health are actively pushing the public into poor health.
The protest meeting was also addressed by senior CPIM leaders Krishnappa Salian and U Jayantha Nayak. A large number of activists and members of the public participated in the demonstration, including CPIM district leaders Shekar Kunder, Rafeeq Harekala, and Padmavathi Shetty, alongside Ullal zone leaders Pramodini, Vilasini, Rohidas, Janardhana Kuthar, Chandrahasa Pilar, Sundara Kumpala, Ibrahim Amblamogaru, Padmanabha Kumpala, Mahabala Deppalimar, Ashraf Harekala, Iqbal Harekala, and DYFI district leaders Rizwan Harekala, Ameer Ullalbail, Asfak Alekala, Shravan Kuthar, Deekshith Kuthar, Sadashiva Kuthar, Naveen Giriyamoule, Chandrashekhar Pilar, and Sundara Poojary.
