Bengaluru : Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the government will withdraw the cases filed against Kannada activists (Kannada Horatagararu). The CM made this assurance while addressing the gathering.
Praise for Vatal Nagaraj and Emphasis on Language
CM Siddaramaiah highly praised Vatal Nagaraj, calling him an activist who never compromised on the issue of Kannada. The Chief Minister recalled that Vatal had refused to give up his Kannada party and the Kannada movement even when the then CM Devaraj Urs offered him a ministerial position.
Speaking after flagging off the magnificent procession of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari and Goddess Annamma at the Nrupatunga Mantapa, Mysore Bank Circle, the CM urged the public to cultivate pride and love for Kannada land, water, language, and culture. He issued a call for everyone to build a Kannada environment and asked citizens to respond only in Kannada, even if spoken to in another language. He further appealed to everyone to take a pledge: “On the Kannada soil, we will speak in Kannada.”
Action on Devaraj Urs’ Doctorate Demand
Responding to the demand made by Vatal Nagaraj and Sa. Ra. Govindu to confer a posthumous Doctorate on Devaraj Urs by the Mysore University, the Chief Minister assured them that he would discuss the matter with the Syndicate members. He expressed shock that Urs had not yet been given a Doctorate and promised to look into the matter. The CM also shared that he himself had been offered a Doctorate by Mysore University previously but declined it, stating his personal belief that a Doctorate should be earned through study and expansion of knowledge.
Stance on Belagavi and MES
The Chief Minister was unequivocal on the border dispute, asserting that there would be no compromise on the Belagavi issue. He stated that the Mahajan Report is final, and Belagavi is the land of Kannada and an integral part of Karnataka—a fact no one can deny. Addressing the issue of MES (Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti), he said MES members are also Kannadigas, but the government will suppress any hooliganism. He also assured that the government is ready to do whatever is necessary for the development of Kannada schools in the border regions.
Personal View on Bilingualism
Regarding language policy, the CM stated that he is personally in favour of bilingualism (Dwibhasha). However, he clarified that if a bilingual policy is to be enacted as law, it must first be discussed and decided upon in the Cabinet.
