Mangaluru : Yenepoya Deemed to be University successfully concluded its four-day Campus Bird Count (CBC) 2026, held from February 13 to 16. The comprehensive survey, aimed at documenting the avian diversity within the university’s ecosystem, resulted in the identification of 58 distinct bird species. A total of 107 enthusiastic students and staff members participated in four structured field visits, where they observed, photographed, and systematically recorded the birds, highlighting the rich biodiversity thriving within the campus grounds.
To ensure scientific accuracy and engagement, the initiative featured expert-led orientation and lecture sessions. Noted birdwatcher Gopalakrishna A. provided a detailed framework on the Great Backyard Bird Count methodology, teaching participants how to identify birding hotspots and utilize mobile applications for real-time reporting. Complementing this, zoologist and researcher Dr. Vineeth Kumar K. delivered an insightful lecture titled “Feathered Jewels,” which focused on the ecological significance of birds and practical techniques for species identification based on unique physical features.
The event was organized by the Centre for Environmental Studies at Yenepoya University under the coordination of Deputy Director Dr. Bhagya B. Sharma. By integrating citizen science with academic learning, the university continues to reinforce its commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity awareness. The data collected during this exercise serves as a vital record for ongoing conservation efforts and fosters a deeper appreciation for nature among the campus community.
