Mangaluru : The Dr. P. Dayananda Pai and Sri P. Satish Pai Yakshagana Study Centre of Mangalore University has announced the Yakshamangala Awards for the year 2025-26. Renowned Badagutittu singer Kappe kere Subraya Bhagavatha, Yakshagana mentor Mambadi Subrahmanya Bhat, and veteran Talamaddale orator Jabbar Samo have been chosen for the honorary Yakshamangala Award. Additionally, the Yakshamangala Krithi Award for literature has been bagged by Krishna Prakash Ulithaya for his significant works, ‘Balipa Marga’ and ‘Agari Marga’. The main award carries a cash prize of 25,000, while the book award includes 10,000, along with citations and mementos.
The awardees represent decades of excellence in the field of Yakshagana. Kappe kere Subraya Bhagavatha is a legendary figure in the Badagutittu style with over fifty years of service across various troupes. Mambadi Subrahmanya Bhat is recognized for his immense contribution as a guru, training hundreds of disciples in the Himmela (background music) tradition. Jabbar Samo stands out as a distinguished ‘Arthadhari’ (orator) in Talamaddale, celebrated for his profound scholarship and ability to transcend community boundaries through his art. Meanwhile, Krishna Prakash Ulithaya’s award-winning books provide a deep analytical look into the lives and singing styles of the legendary Balipa and Agari lineages.
The selection was made by a committee led by folklore scholar Dr. K. Chinnappa Gowda. In a significant boost to the study of this art form, Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.L. Dharma announced that philanthropist Dr. Dayananda Pai has pledged a special grant of 1 crore to the Yakshagana Study Centre to expand research activities. The awards will be presented in a formal ceremony scheduled for March, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, where Dr. Pai is expected to officially hand over the grant.
