Mangaluru : Senior scholar Dr. Prabhakar Joshi paid a rich tribute to the late cultural organizer, playwright, and politician Ramachandra Baikampady, describing him as a leader with a genuine passion for heritage. Speaking at a “Nudi Namana” (tribute) program held at Tulu Bhavan in Mangaluru on Saturday, Dr. Joshi noted that while Baikampady was a significant political figure, he may not have been “politically fortunate” in terms of electoral success. However, his immense contribution to the cultural landscape of the coastal region remains unparalleled. The event was organized to honor the memory of the former Tulu Academy member and recipient of the Academy’s annual honorary award.
Several prominent personalities shared their memories of Baikampady’s multifaceted life. Renowned theater director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail remarked that Ramachandra Baikampady was instrumental in shaping the careers and lives of many individuals. Theater director Jagan Pawar Bekal recalled his leadership in uniting artists in Mangaluru through the “Samskritika Kriya Ranga” organization. Additionally, Harish Shetty, President of the Jayakrishna Parisara Premi Samiti, highlighted Baikampady’s frontline role in various environmental struggles, showcasing his commitment to social causes beyond the arts.
The memorial service saw participation from a wide spectrum of community leaders and artists. Tulu Sahitya Academy President Taranath Gatti Kapikad, All India Tulu Federation President A.C. Bhandari, and leaders such as Jagadish Adhikari and Shobhendra Sashihitlu were among those who offered their respects. Other notable speakers included veteran director Thamma Lakshmana and Franklin Monteiro, alongside representatives from various cultural and protection forums. The gathering, which included journalists and artists from Mumbai and Mangaluru, underscored the late leader’s widespread influence across the regional cultural and social spheres.
