Mangaluru : South MLA Vedavyas Kamath has welcomed the verdict of the Special NIA Court, which sentenced terrorist Mohammed Shariq to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Shariq was the prime accused in the Mangaluru cooker bomb blast and had reportedly targeted the historic Kadri Manjunatha Temple. The MLA stated that the court’s decision serves as a significant lesson to all those who choose the path of terrorism, emphasizing that such ideologies, inspired by organizations like ISIS, have no place in society.
Criticizing the opposition, Kamath remarked that the Congress party should engage in self-introspection. He recalled that during the time of the incident, some leaders had allegedly attempted to downplay the gravity of the act by referring to the accused with soft terms or calling it a “small incident.” He questioned the Congress’s ability to protect the state, suggesting that their “soft stance” on terrorism raises natural concerns among the public regarding safety and security.
The MLA also highlighted the support provided to the victim of the blast, Purushottam Poojary, during the BJP government’s tenure. He noted that providing 5 lakh in compensation along with a new auto-rickshaw to help Poojary rebuild his life was the first step toward justice, while the current court verdict serves as the final stage of legal justice for the victim. Kamath reiterated his hope that such stringent legal actions would deter future radicalization in the region.
