Mangaluru : The Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO), a constituent college of Nitte (Deemed to be University), successfully inaugurated its two-day international ‘Media Conference 2026’ at the Paneer Campus in Mangaluru. This year’s conference focused on the timely and critical theme, “From Propaganda to Peace: Rethinking Media’s Responsibility in Global Conflicts,” drawing scholars and industry experts to deliberate on the evolving role of journalism in a fractured world.
Dhanya Rajendran, Editor-in-Chief of ‘The News Minute,’ inaugurated the event and addressed the ethical challenges facing modern journalism. Speaking to the next generation of media professionals, she emphasized that technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) should not be viewed as threats. She reassured students that AI would not steal jobs if journalists maintained their professional integrity and commitment to public welfare, suggesting instead that these tools can be harnessed to enhance effective storytelling.
Presiding over the ceremony, Prof. Dr. M.S. Moodithaya, Vice Chancellor of Nitte University, urged the media to embrace objectivity and pro-people reporting. He cautioned journalists to be particularly mindful and sensitive when covering wars and global conflicts. Adding a global perspective, Dr. Nikhil Moro from Kansas State University, USA, delivered the keynote address, advocating for a shift from purely data-driven news to reporting that prioritizes human-centric analysis and empathy.
The event was welcomed by Dr. Moullyya Baladi, Head of NICO, while the organizing secretary, Dr. Anisha, shared the conceptual vision of the conference. Following the formal inauguration, various technical sessions were held featuring distinguished resource persons, including retired Lieutenant General A.K. Bhat, TV9 Digital Editor Dr. Bhaskar Hegde, and Dr. Shraddha Rai, Associate Director of Rudram Dynamics.
