Bengaluru : Following the Karnataka Cabinet’s landmark decision in Mangaluru to grant Tulu the status of the state’s second official language for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed immense pride and delight over the widespread jubilation among Tulu speakers. Reacting to the historic announcement on social media platform X, Siddaramaiah extended his warm greetings in Tulu (“Maatha Tuluvereg Enna Mokedha Solmelu”) and stated that he feels deeply satisfied to see the foundation he laid during his tenure as Chief Minister finally culminate in this historic achievement through the present Congress government.
Siddaramaiah highlighted that the initial momentum toward granting official language status to Tulu was set in motion during his administration. He recalled that his government had constituted a special committee headed by K.M. Gayatri, the then Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, to study the model implemented in Andhra Pradesh regarding regional official languages and submit a comprehensive report. The insights and groundwork provided by that study paved the way for the recent Cabinet decision to recognize Tulu as the second additional official language for the twin coastal districts.
Emphasizing the cultural significance of the move, Siddaramaiah noted that a language is far more than a medium of communication; it embodies the history, rich heritage, culture, and identity of its people. He remarked that a process initiated to respect the long-standing demand of Tuluvas and accord institutional honor to their mother tongue has now materialized into a momentous policy decision, and he wholeheartedly welcomed the Cabinet’s resolution honoring Tulu’s glorious tradition.
