Mangaluru : Although Dakshina Kannada district was placed under an orange alert on Friday, the anticipated heavy rainfall remained largely absent until the afternoon. However, skies opened up later in the evening, bringing significant downpours across both urban and rural localities. Anticipating severe weather conditions, the district administration had proactively declared a holiday for all schools and pre-university (PU) colleges on Friday. The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning extending until July 8, consequently stretching the orange alert into July 4.
The district recorded an average of 22.2 mm of rainfall by 8:00 AM on Friday morning. Region-wise data indicates that Puttur experienced the highest downpour with 43.9 mm, closely followed by Sullia at 42.2 mm. Among other areas, Mangaluru noted 25.2 mm, Kadaba 33 mm, Moodbidri 21.6 mm, Belthangady 17.4 mm, Bantwal 13.9 mm, Ullal 13.4 mm, and Mulki recorded the lowest with 5 mm of rain.
The continuous precipitation over the last 24 hours has led to a noticeable rise in the water levels of major rivers across the district. Currently, the Netravati River stands at 5.19 meters in Bantwal and 24.5 meters at Uppinangadi. Meanwhile, the Kumaradhara River at Pulikkukku has reached a level of 78.75 meters, and the Gurupura River at Attur is flowing at 2.24 meters.
