Mangaluru : Former BJP State President Nalin Kumar Kateel stated that bringing God’s name into political matters or resorting to religious oaths is not appropriate given the current political climate. Speaking to reporters in Mangaluru, he emphasized that it was inherently wrong for MLAs, who were elected on a BJP ticket, to indulge in cross-voting. He added that an internal inquiry must be conducted to ensure that those who betrayed the party face necessary disciplinary action.
Commenting on BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra’s emotional statement about convening a legislative party meeting at Dharmasthala for all 64 BJP MLAs to take a religious oath, Kateel noted that the party functions purely on trust and confidence. While acknowledging that Vijayendra’s pain and outrage over the cross-voting were completely justified, Kateel suggested that an internal investigation would be a more suitable way to address the issue rather than resorting to religious pledges.
Kateel asserted that the cross-voting incident during the Legislative Council elections is a serious breach of discipline that cannot be brushed under the carpet. He expressed full confidence in the party’s ability to identify the defectors and promised to stand firmly with Vijayendra in ensuring that those who betrayed the party receive stringent punishment.
He further noted that an internal fact-finding committee comprising senior leaders C.T. Ravi, Mahesh Tenginakai, and Mahesh Shivaram has already been formed to probe the matter. Kateel advised that any further course of action, including discussions on holding meetings at religious places, should only be considered after this committee submits its final investigation report.
Responding to queries regarding C.T. Ravi’s statement that a report would be submitted within two days, Kateel expressed confidence that the committee is making rapid progress. He reiterated that the BJP is a party known for its strict discipline and historically has never hesitated to penalize those who violate its code of conduct. When asked if he would attend the proposed legislative meeting, Kateel affirmed his commitment, stating that it is his duty to participate in all party activities whenever required.
