Mangaluru : International Asteroid Day was celebrated on Tuesday at the Pilikula Regional Science Centre, under the auspices of the Pilikula Development Authority. The event aimed to cultivate scientific curiosity and awareness about celestial bodies among the younger generation.
Inaugurating the program, renowned astronomer Dr. Ramesh M. Bhat emphasized the crucial need to raise public awareness about asteroids and understand their immense scientific significance. He delivered an insightful session detailing the origin of asteroids, their chemical compositions, dwarf planets, meteors, and the orbital paths of comets within the solar system. Furthermore, Dr. Bhat educated the students on various research projects and satellite-based experiments undertaken by global space agencies to study asteroids, as well as the cutting-edge technologies being developed to prevent potential asteroid impacts on Earth.
Adding an interactive element to the day, Vishvesh Bhat, the Scientific Officer of the centre, conducted an engaging astronomy-themed quiz competition for the participants. Following this, Innovation Hub mentors Hrithik and Shrishanth Shetty shared valuable insights on project preparation and showcased practical demonstrations to inspire the students. Additionally, a captivating live astronomy show and a special screening titled “Two Pieces of Glasses” were organized at the planetarium.
The educational event saw enthusiastic participation from around 200 high school students and teachers from across the Dakshina Kannada district. Jagannath, the Curator of the centre, welcomed the gathering, while Chanchalakshi rendered the vote of thanks. The program was compiled and anchored by technician Vandana.
