Mysuru : Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar has expressed his opposition to organizing the traditional Kambala event as part of the Mysuru Dasara festivities. During a press conference, he stated that Kambala is a culturally and religiously rooted tradition, and bringing it to Mysuru could lead to its commercialization, which he believes is inappropriate. He had previously shared his concerns regarding this matter on social media.
The state government has initiated plans to host the coastal region’s world-famous sport, Kambala, in Mysuru for the first time, aiming to introduce it to a wider audience. However, this proposal has sparked significant local pushback. MP Yaduveer criticized the move, questioning the justification of spending 8 crore rupees on such an event during a period of drought. He pointed out that when the Chief Minister has advised farmers to limit certain crops due to water scarcity, such expenditure seems unreasonable. He suggested that if drought conditions persist, the authorities should focus on a simpler and more traditional celebration of Dasara, as has been the practice in the past.
Furthermore, the MP emphasized that the collective focus should remain on strengthening the core essence of the Mysuru Dasara. He highlighted that the current organization of the festival is plagued by administrative lapses, lack of infrastructure, and various systemic challenges. He urged the government and the high-level Dasara committee to prioritize resolving these internal issues and addressing existing logistical hurdles before considering the introduction of new events.
