Mangaluru: The Panambur police on Wednesday arrested a notorious rowdy-sheeter who had been absconding following a robbery near Tannirbhavi beach. The accused, identified as Chandu Harris (33), a resident of Kasba Bengre, was apprehended after a period of evasion. During the arrest, the police recovered several stolen items, including a smart watch and a power bank, along with the motorcycle used during the commission of the crime. Harris is a habitual offender with over 30 criminal cases registered against him and was already on the rowdy-sheet at the Panambur police station, with three active court warrants pending against him.
The incident dates back to the early hours of April 13, when the complainant, Ajay K (29) from Somwarpet, arrived in Mangaluru with his friends to celebrate his birthday. While heading towards Tannirbhavi beach at around 2:30 AM, they lost their way and ended up near Kasba Bengre. When they stopped to ask for directions from two local youths, the duo offered to guide them and sat in the back of the car. However, they soon forced Ajay to stop the vehicle, threatened the occupants with a screwdriver, and damaged the car’s windshield. The assailants robbed the group of valuables worth ₹24,500, including watches, a camera gimbal, and cash.
Investigations revealed that Chandu Harris arrived at the scene on a motorcycle shortly after the robbery to collect the stolen goods and help the other two suspects escape. Previously, on the day of the incident, the police had successfully tracked down and arrested the other two accomplices, Mohammad Sinan (24) and Zaheer Nisar (22). While some items were recovered during the initial arrests, Harris had managed to flee. Under the guidance of senior officials, Inspector Saleem Abbas and his team finally tracked down Harris on Wednesday, successfully concluding the search for all primary suspects in the case.
