Udupi : A Malpe-registered gillnet fishing boat named ‘Manju Matha’, which had previously encountered a mid-sea mishap, drifted and washed ashore at the Uchila beach in Ermalu Bada village on Friday evening. The area falls under the jurisdiction of the Hejamadi Coastal Security Police (CSP) station. The vessel had originally set sail for fishing into the Arabian Sea from the Malpe port on the morning of June 29, but by afternoon, water began leaking heavily from its hull. As the situation grew unmanageable, the crew sought assistance from the Indian Coast Guard. A rescue team rushed to the coordinates and safely evacuated all six fishermen onboard, though the sinking vessel had to be abandoned in the deep sea.
Following the rescue operation, authorities including the CSP, Fisheries Department, Immigration, and local police took custody of the fishermen at the New Mangalore Port Authority to verify their credentials. The verification process confirmed that four of the rescued individuals hailed from Tamil Nadu, while the remaining two were from Kerala. However, the voyage itself has landed the boat owner in significant trouble. A formal report has been submitted to the Fisheries Department urging strict legal action, including the cancellation of the boat’s license and registration, due to a direct violation of the mandatory monsoon fishing ban imposed by the Deputy Commissioner.
The abandoned boat finally drifted close to the Uchila coastline around 6:15 PM on Friday. Upon receiving information about its sighting, Hejamadi CSP Head Constable Abdul Razak, along with CPC Praveen, KND Rajesh, and Teertha, rushed to the spot. Working in coordination with local fishermen and residents, the police personnel managed to securely secure the battered vessel and pull it safely onto the shore.
