Mangaluru : On the eve of Christmas, the Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of the Diocese of Mangalore, has released a poignant message calling for a return to truth, transparency, and ethical conduct in public life. In a statement addressed to the media, the Bishop emphasized that the birth of Jesus Christ serves as a reaffirmation of the values of justice and harmonious coexistence, urging society to move beyond the rising challenges of violence, misinformation, and mutual distrust that currently threaten the nation’s future.
Expressing deep concern over the current social climate, the Bishop highlighted the “erosion of truth and justice in the public sphere.” He noted that fundamental rights—including personal privacy, the right to a life of dignity, and religious freedom—are increasingly under pressure. His message pointedly addressed the growing divisions based on caste, religion, and social status, describing the daily reports of innocent people falling victim to exploitation and fraudulent activities as “heartbreaking.”
The Bishop’s message further stressed that safeguarding ethical values is not merely a legal requirement but a vital necessity to prevent “society’s failure.” He called upon elected representatives, government bodies, and administrative institutions to prioritize integrity in public life and ensure people-centered accountability. For the nation to achieve genuine development, the Bishop argued, it is essential to protect the constitutional rights of every citizen and foster a spirit of fraternity among all communities.
Concluding his address, Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha expressed hope that the Christmas feast of the Jubilee Year 2025 would bring a “new ray of hope” and ethical renewal to public life. He invoked the message that love conquers hatred and light dispels darkness, wishing for peace to shine not only in individual homes but also within the nation’s public systems and decision-making bodies. He extended his warm greetings for Christmas and the New Year to all citizens, invoking divine blessings upon the land.
