Mangaluru : Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture, K. Venkatesh, announced that the state government is making concerted efforts to commence classes at the newly constructed Veterinary College in Koila, Kadaba taluk, from the upcoming academic year. Speaking after inspecting the college building, livestock breeding center, and training facilities on Tuesday, the Minister noted that the project, which had its foundation stone laid in 2016 by the then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, is now structurally complete.
The essential infrastructure, including the college administrative block, hostels, and laboratories, is ready for use. To ensure smooth functioning, the government has already sanctioned 13 lecturer posts and 32 non-teaching staff positions. The Minister emphasized that the primary focus is now on obtaining the necessary approval from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI), and officials have been instructed to expedite this process to ensure first-year classes can begin as planned.
During the progress review meeting, Minister Venkatesh urged officials to prioritize the conservation of rare livestock breeds and increase the production of value-added dairy and poultry products. Addressing the decline in livestock population in Dakshina Kannada, he directed the department to organize programs to encourage dairy farming. He also addressed concerns regarding insurance claims, instructing head office officials to take action against insurance companies that fail to respond adequately to farmers’ needs.
Sullia MLA Bhagirathi Murulya, who was present at the meeting, requested additional grants for infrastructure at the Sullia taluk gaushala and urged that milk produced at the Koila center be made available to local residents. The Koila center, established in 1951, has provided 247 acres for the college and 98 acres for the district gaushala, which currently houses 154 cattle. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Principal Secretary Vinoth Priya and Vice-Chancellor of Bidar Veterinary University, Dr. K.C. Veeranna.
