Renowned suspension bridge builder and Padma Shri recipient, Dr. Girish Bharadwaj (76), passed away on Tuesday morning at KVG Hospital in Sullia. He had been undergoing medical treatment for a heart-related ailment at the hospital for the past few days.
Dedicated to social service, Dr. Bharadwaj earned the titles of ‘Sethu Bandhu’ and ‘Bridge Man of India’ for constructing over 125 suspension bridges across the country. In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, the Central Government honored him with the Padma Shri award in 2017.
His career began in 1989 with the construction of a suspension bridge across the Payaswini River in Arambur, Dakshina Kannada. This service journey subsequently expanded to include the construction of 30 bridges in Kerala, two each in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, and numerous others across various rural parts of Karnataka, which continue to facilitate travel for the public to this day.
Deeply saddened by his demise, Dakshina Kannada MP and BJP State Secretary Captain Brijesh Chowta expressed his heartfelt condolences. He remembered Dr. Bharadwaj as a great achiever from Tulu Nadu, famously known as the ‘Captain of Suspension Bridges,’ who sparked a connectivity revolution in rural India by building eco-friendly bridges using unique, innovative technology.
