New Delhi : Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta held a high-level meeting with B. Umashankar, Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in New Delhi, to expedite critical road infrastructure projects in his constituency. Following the central government’s approval of a ₹49.22 crore special grant for urgent repairs on the Mani-Sampaje section of NH-275, the MP urged the Ministry to fast-track the administrative and alignment approvals required to upgrade the highway into a four-lane road. He emphasized that this project is essential for improving connectivity between the coastal and interior regions, enhancing road safety, and fostering regional economic growth within a set timeframe.
During the discussions, the MP also reviewed the progress of the Mangaluru-Bengaluru Expressway project. He welcomed the Alignment Approval Committee’s recent clearance for the new road design through the Shiradi Ghat section. Currently, the project is in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) preparation phase, with concurrent efforts underway to secure necessary clearances from the forest, environment, and wildlife departments. Captain Chowta reiterated that strengthening the connectivity between Mangaluru and Bengaluru remains a top priority, and he assured that he would continue to coordinate closely with the concerned central ministries to ensure the timely execution of these vital infrastructure works.
Reflecting on the importance of these initiatives, Captain Chowta stated that building world-class connectivity is the foundational step toward encouraging people to return to their roots in the district. He highlighted that robust road infrastructure acts as a gateway for investment, economic development, and job creation, making the region an ideal place to live, work, and build a future. He expressed his firm commitment to tirelessly pursue these projects until they are successfully realized.
Regarding the specific development of the Mani-Sampaje highway, the Ministry has sanctioned ₹49.22 crore for urgent repairs covering 71.60 km, employing the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. The proposed improvements include laying a 40mm thick bituminous layer, shoulder maintenance, and the installation of traffic signage and road markings. The tendering process is expected to commence immediately upon receiving the final financial and document approvals. Simultaneously, the proposal to upgrade this route to a four-lane highway with paved shoulders has been included in the 2026-27 annual plan, with the DPR and alignment design nearing the final approval stage.
