Mangaluru : The state government has approved a significant infrastructure upgrade for Mangaluru and its neighboring municipalities, involving a ₹300 crore project to install underground electricity cables. Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader announced that this initiative by MESCOM will cover the Mangaluru City Corporation, Ullal City Municipal Council, and Someshwar Town Panchayat limits. Out of the total budget, ₹186.45 crore is specifically earmarked for the Ullal region to modernize the power distribution network and enhance safety in residential areas.
Addressing a press conference at the MESCOM office on Wednesday, Speaker Khader emphasized that the project aims to eliminate the dangers of dangling high-tension wires and improve the aesthetic appeal of the coastal cities. These specialized cables will be laid at a depth of 1.5 meters and are designed to function efficiently for approximately 25 years. Alongside the power project, Khader noted that proposals for a permanent solution to sea erosion in Ullal have been submitted, and pending work in wave-affected areas has already been completed.
In addition to utility upgrades, a new site has been sanctioned for a centralized police administrative complex. This state-of-the-art facility, estimated to cost ₹20 crore, will house the ACP office, the traffic police department, and a specialized AI Cyber Center under one roof. The press conference was attended by prominent officials, including MESCOM Chairman Harish Kumar, Managing Director Jayakumar, and MUDA Chairman Sadashiva Ullal, marking a collaborative step toward regional development.
