Puttur : The investigation into a complaint lodged by a young woman, who alleged she was threatened with a knife on her way to work in Puttur, has taken a significant twist. The local police have now registered two separate cases after the youths accused in the initial complaint filed a counter-complaint, shifting the direction of the probe.
According to the details provided by the authorities, the incident transpired around 6:45 AM on July 8 when the woman, a local resident of Puttur, was heading to her workplace. She reported seeing an acquaintance named Sohail—who had studied with her in college—standing at Purusharakatte with a knife in his hand. Suspecting that Sohail and four of his companions were trailing her vehicle, she later filed a formal complaint at the Puttur Women’s Police Station.
In her statement, the woman claimed that after parking her scooter at Purusharakatte to commute to Mangaluru for work, a group of young men confronted her, brandished a knife, and issued threats. She further alleged that even after she managed to escape the scene in an auto-rickshaw, the group, comprising about six individuals in a Thar vehicle, pursued her to repeat their intimidation. While nearby CCTV footage reportedly captured the youths holding a knife, the accused presented a completely different explanation during the preliminary inquiry.
The youths clarified to the investigators that they had simply bought bread from a local bakery and borrowed a knife from the store to spread cheese on it. They asserted that they were merely returning the knife to the shop at the time and had no criminal intentions whatsoever, after which they proceeded to the gym for their regular workout routine.
Furthermore, the accused youths filed a counter-complaint at the Puttur Town police station, claiming that Murali Krishna Hamsathadka, an individual associated with a local organization, along with others, was deliberately using the woman to orchestrate a false case against them. They alleged that this manipulation was being carried out with malicious intent fueled by religious hostility, despite those involved being fully aware of the true facts.
The Puttur police have confirmed that both cases have been officially registered and a exhaustive, detailed investigation is currently underway to uncover the truth. The law enforcement authorities have also issued a strict warning stating that legal action will be initiated against anyone found fabricating facts or spreading false information on social media platforms regarding this sensitive incident.
