Belthangady : Commuters traveling through the Charmadi Ghat stretch faced a harrowing time on Monday morning as a lone tusker wandered onto the road, leading to a traffic jam that lasted for over an hour. The incident occurred at the 10th hairpin curve of the ghat road, where the wild elephant suddenly emerged from the forest and stood in the middle of the path.
The presence of the elephant brought vehicular movement to a complete standstill on both sides of the narrow ghat road. Long queues of vehicles were seen stretching across the curves as drivers and passengers waited in anxiety, watching the majestic but unpredictable animal from a distance. For more than sixty minutes, travelers were stuck, unable to proceed due to the blockage caused by the tusker.
After spending a significant amount of time on the asphalt, the elephant eventually moved back into the dense forest on its own. Only after the animal retreated did the forest department and local authorities manage to clear the bottleneck, allowing the traffic to resume. While no injuries or damage to property were reported, the incident served as a stark reminder of the frequent man-animal encounters in this sensitive ecological zone.
