Belthangady : The Belthangady police have arrested Hindu activist Puneeth Kerehalli in Bengaluru following his failure to appear for questioning regarding a hate speech case. The arrest was executed after the police obtained a warrant from the Belthangady court, as the activist had reportedly ignored previous notices to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The case pertains to allegations of delivering and circulating provocative speeches on social media platforms aimed at inciting communal hatred within society.
The legal proceedings originated from a formal complaint filed on August 7, 2025, by Joram Barboza, a resident of Hunekatte in Kasba village, Belthangady. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered at the local police station. After tracking his location to Bengaluru, a dedicated police team apprehended him and brought him back to Belthangady on Wednesday evening for further legal formalities.
Upon his arrival at the Belthangady police station, officials commenced an interrogation session regarding the digital content and the nature of the speeches mentioned in the complaint. Following the completion of the preliminary inquiry, the police are expected to produce him before the jurisdictional court. This action underscores the local administration’s commitment to monitoring social media activity and addressing content that threatens regional public harmony.
