Mangaluru : In a major move to enhance road safety and curb traffic violations, the Mangaluru Police Department has introduced advanced laser-based speed gun cameras across city limits and highway outskirts. Following the successful installation of static cameras in various locations, the department is now upgrading its surveillance technology to specifically target high-speed driving on National Highways 66 and 73. This initiative comes in response to the rising number of road accidents, aiming to enforce strict adherence to the speed limits already displayed on signboards along these routes.
The newly deployed ‘Laser Track’ speed gun technology allows traffic personnel to record violations with precise photographic and video evidence. Unlike older handheld devices, these state-of-the-art scanners emit laser beams to calculate a vehicle’s speed instantaneously and accurately, even from a significant distance. When a vehicle exceeds the permitted limit, the system automatically captures the image, registration number, time, and exact speed. This data is then used to generate e-challans, providing solid evidence that makes it nearly impossible for violators to contest the fines.
To maximize effectiveness, traffic police are strategically positioning these laser devices on stands at identified ‘black spots’—areas where accidents are most frequent. Offending motorists receive fine notices either on the spot or via mobile alerts. Police officials emphasized that this tech-driven enforcement is a critical step toward reducing fatalities on the road. By ensuring that every violation is documented with foolproof evidence, the department hopes to instill better driving discipline among commuters in the coastal region.
