Mangaluru: Society is currently languishing due to a distinct lack of guidance from elders and seniors, observed Prof. P. L. Dharma, the Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University. Speaking as the chief guest at the annual Alumni Day celebrations hosted at the University College in the city, he emphasized that it is a matter of immense pride that this educational institution is not treated merely as an organization, but is embraced wholeheartedly as an extended family. He raised concerns over the visible lack of value-based, cultural, and traditional education in today’s learning centers, adding that the disciplined lifestyle and moral ideals of the older generation must be systematically passed down to the youth. The physical presence and active involvement of alumni should serve as an enduring source of inspiration for the current crop of students.
Sharing his perspectives at the gathering, the immediate past president of the alumni association and retired army officer, Colonel Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandari, suggested that educational setups need to focus heavily on training and skill development to prepare students for a highly competitive world. He noted that experienced seniors are uniquely positioned to pass down this crucial, experience-based knowledge to the next generation, urging the alumni association to actively draft initiatives in this direction. Adding to this, the Principal of the college, Prof. Ganapathi Gowda S., remarked that keeping tabs on individuals who have meaningfully contributed to society is of paramount importance. In an era rapidly reshaped by technology, the wisdom of veterans remains indispensable, and he reminded students that alumni are not just nominal representatives but the living heartbeat that drives the ongoing growth of the institution.
Presiding over the formal event, the President of the Alumni Association, Ramadas Gowda S., outlined the core purpose behind organizing the annual meet. He urged the student community to pursue their life goals with unwavering focus, dedication, and self-discipline, asserting that consistent effort backed by confidence is the only pathway to reaching the pinnacle of success. The celebratory event also served as an occasion to officially felicitate Colonel Nitteguttu Sharath Bhandari for his distinguished services. Furthermore, showcasing alumni solidarity, advocate Lohithas R. handed over a generous donation of ₹50,000 to the college principal toward the institution’s welfare initiative, ‘Ondu Hottu Kai Tuthu’. The annual report and the historic journey of the association were presented during the introductory remarks by the General Secretary, Subhashchandra Kanva Teertha, in the presence of Vice-President D. Srinivasa Nayak, Joint Secretary Dr. Vanaja, and Treasurer U. Mohan Rao, who delivered the vote of thanks, while executive committee members Vishwanath Kotekar and Shubha K. H. anchored the formal program.
